Every year on Valentine Day the plaza is transformed into a giant wedding party. The DIF, a state government agency, offers free nuptial rites to those who have been living together as man and wife and just haven’t gotten around to saying, “I do.” Couples of all ages arrive, most come with their children. It looks like a full house this morning. There are seventy eight reserved chairs draped in white and decorated with red ribbon. There will be a huge wedding party in the plaza this afternoon! Felicidades!
To all my dear readers and friends who come to visit me here in these pages…
MUY FELIZ DIA DE SAN VALENTIN!
Y UN ABRAZO FUERTE!

There was a time, not that long ago, I swear, it seems like only yesterday when here in Tecate we had more horses than cars. We had two traffic lights. Then the government made a terrible mistake. Governments do that from time to time, you know. They paved the roads! And now we have more cars than horses. Parking is impossible and there’s no place to tie up in the plaza. It’s nice to see we still have a few individuals who saddle up and ride in to town. Do I sound nostalgic? Truth be known, I’m more nostalgic about the future than the past. Do I sound like Proust? It must be the madeleines I had this afternoon.
