On September 16th Mexico commemorates that day back in 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo gave his famous “grito”, the cry for independence from Spanish rule. Monday night at 11PM Cesar Moreno, our municipal president will step out on the balcony of the Palacio Municipal and reenact “El Grito.’ Today is only September 13th but here in Tecate the independence day festivities have already begun. Our streets are closed in preparation for the four days of non-stop fiesta, parades, fireworks and parties. We know how to get a lot of mileage out of a holiday. The holiday is also celebrated in a great part of the United States. I don’t suppose the 16th of September is too popular in Spain, anymore than the 4th of July is rejoiced in England. But here in Tecate it’s fiesta time!
